Ok, picture this: it's 3 AM. You're dead asleep, dreaming of… well, probably cheese if you're me. Then BAM! A thump, followed by frantic scrabbling. You jolt awake, heart pounding, thinking your house is being invaded. But no, it's worse. It's Minou. And she's brought you a… gift.

A gift, you say? Yes, a gift. A live, twitching, terrified mouse. Thanks, Minou! So thoughtful. (Said through gritted teeth, obviously).

So, yeah. That’s the story of my life. My cat, Minou, has this, uh, habit of bringing live mice into the house. And I'm not talking about one or two over the years. We're talking a regular, almost weekly, rodent delivery service. Anyone else have this problem? Seriously, tell me I'm not alone!

Why the Live Mice?

The big question, of course, is why? Why not just kill the darn thing and be done with it? Well, there are a few theories floating around. Apparently, it's a remnant of their hunting instincts. (Isn't evolution fun? Especially at 3 AM!).

Theory #1: She thinks I'm a useless hunter. (Ouch, but probably true). She brings the mouse home to teach me how to hunt. Like, "Here, Mom, this is how you do it. Pay attention!" I guess my attempts at opening a can of tuna don't impress her much.

Theory #2: She's saving it for later. Maybe she’s building a little pantry in the attic. I swear I hear scratching up there sometimes… Just kidding! (Mostly.)

Theory #3: She's playing. Cats are, let's face it, little sadists. They love the chase. The capture. The… well, you get the picture. And a live mouse provides much more entertainment than a dead one. (Talk about your interactive toys!) Plus, it gives her the chance to kill it slowly, a real bonus in her book, I'm sure.

The Aftermath: A Frantic Game of Catch-The-Mouse

Regardless of the reason, the real fun begins once the mouse is inside. Cue the frantic chasing, the overturned furniture, the desperate attempts to confine the mouse (and the cat) to a single room. I’ve gotten really good at improvising mouse traps with Tupperware and cereal boxes. You’d be impressed. Or maybe just pity me. Either way, I’m taking applications for assistant mouse-catcher. Must be fast, agile, and not easily grossed out. Salary: Zero. Benefits: The satisfaction of saving a tiny, terrified creature (and preventing further chaos).

And let's not forget the existential dread of knowing that, even after you’ve (hopefully) evicted the unwanted guest, there's probably another one lurking in the garden, just waiting for its moment to be… “gifted” to you by your beloved feline overlord. Joy.

Living With a Professional Hunter

So, what's the solution? I've tried everything. Bell, check. Indoor cat, check. Ignoring her with the hope she'll just give up, double check. Nothing seems to work. Minou is a determined hunter. It's in her DNA. And frankly, a part of me admires her dedication. (The other part is just really, really tired).

Maybe I should just embrace it. Turn my house into a mouse sanctuary. Charge admission. Become a tourist attraction. "Come see Minou, the Mouse Whisperer!" I’m only half kidding.
