Saekano: Comment éduquer Une Petite Amie Ennuyeuse

Okay, so picture this: I'm at the local anime convention, drowning in a sea of cosplayers and merchandise. I'm desperately searching for a rare figure, right? Suddenly, BAM! I trip over... wait for it... air. I mean, literally nothing was there. Just my clumsy self proving gravity is still a thing. Mortifying, right? Anyway, as I'm picking myself up, I notice a girl, totally ordinary, just... standing there. Invisible almost. And that, my friends, is pretty much the premise of Saekano: Comment éduquer Une Petite Amie Ennuyeuse – or, if you prefer, Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend.
The whole thing starts with Tomoya Aki, your typical otaku protagonist, who stumbles upon a beautiful girl (that’s Megumi Kato, the almost invisible one) and decides, on a whim, to make her the heroine of his very own dating sim. Because why not? It sounds cliché, I know, but trust me, there's more to it than meets the eye (or should I say, doesn’t meet the eye, given Megumi’s... unique presence).
The "Boring" Girl and the Genius Creators
Now, here's the ironic twist. Tomoya, while passionate, needs a team. He recruits Eriri Spencer Sawamura, his childhood friend and a wildly popular (and secretly erotic) artist, and Utaha Kasumigaoka, a brilliant and incredibly sharp novelist. These two are, let's just say, intense. They're the kind of characters that practically jump off the screen with their exaggerated personalities and... well, their dere. Think tsundere times ten. (Seriously, Utaha could write a thesis on sarcasm.)
Must Read
And then there's Megumi. The antithesis of everything anime heroines usually are. She's not overly cute, not particularly energetic, and definitely not prone to dramatic outbursts. She’s… normal. So normal it's almost subversive. This contrast, my friends, is where the magic happens. It's genius, really!

More Than Just Harem Hijinks
Don't get me wrong, there's definitely a harem element. You've got the childhood friend pining for the protagonist, the cold and calculating author hiding a soft spot, and the seemingly oblivious girl who slowly but surely starts to develop feelings. The usual suspects, right? But Saekano does something interesting. It uses these tropes to explore the creative process, the challenges of teamwork, and the sometimes painful realities of trying to turn an idea into something tangible. (Ever tried collaborating on a project? Yeah, exactly.)
The show delves into the egos of the creators, the compromises they have to make, and the constant struggle between artistic vision and commercial appeal. It’s surprisingly insightful about the world of anime and game development. Plus, the animation is gorgeous! Seriously, the character designs are top-notch.

So, Should You Watch It?
If you're looking for a lighthearted but surprisingly clever anime that pokes fun at the otaku culture while also celebrating its creativity, then yes, absolutely. Saekano is a fun ride with well-developed characters, witty dialogue, and a surprisingly heartwarming story about friendship and the pursuit of dreams. And who knows, maybe you'll even learn a thing or two about raising your own "boring" girlfriend. (Just kidding… unless…? 😉)
Just be warned: You might find yourself strangely attracted to a girl who’s so normal, she's almost… extraordinary. And that, my friends, is the true brilliance of Saekano.
